Profit & Loss figures
We currently have 2 businesses on the same site; the B&B business and our holiday cottage business, all our existing accounts include both these businesses but we are only selling the B&B (we plan to move into the cottage ourselves - unless someone makes us an offer we can't refuse).
Here you can access a spreadsheet showing a Profit & Loss report for our last financial year (ending March 2007). These figures are prepared on an EBITDA basis, they show Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation. We operate above the VAT threshold so all these figures are shown without VAT included.
I have tried to separate out the income and the expenditure for the holiday cottage. These figures can never be better than good estimate.
I have taken quite a pessimistic view, for instance all telephone costs are apportioned to the B&B rather than being split over the two businesses. This is because you will still need a telephone line (or 2) for the B&B even when the cottage is no longer part of the business, you can't buy half a telephone line.
On the other hand we don't have separate telephone line or separate mobile phones for personal use and the Owners' Accommodation figure covers our personal share of a lot of other costs like electricity, gas, maintenance and council tax bills.
There are quite a few areas where you might wish to do things differently from us, for instance we have quite high staff costs, this is obviously a life style choice. Having decided to sell the Bed and Breakfast business we need to spend time developing projects outside the Bed and Breakfast business.
We pay a lot of money (nearly £19,000pa) for that choice, it depends on how much or how little you want to do yourselves, the more work you do yourself the greater your profit.
